Presented by Revtown:
Last week on the show, I talked about navigating a muscle strain. Injury is always tough, especially when it prevents you from moving your body how you really want. This injury for me was pretty difficult to come to terms with, as it derailed my plans to run the London Marathon. After withdrawing my entry, I decided to make lemoncello out of lemons and shift my travel plans from the UK to Italy. It’s taken me years to get to a place where I feel at peace with the things I cannot change. That doesn’t mean the unexpected won’t make me feel some kind of way. But I have the opportunity to navigate the future, not change the past. Sure, this decision is bittersweet. But! I feel excited to focus on rehabbing my body with a side of pizza (and pasta and a bottle — or three — of Montepulciano).
I did want to take a second to mention the messages, though. So. Many. Messages. The outpouring of individuals telling me that they, too, have had to change their plans this fall thanks to an unexpected injury. That they, too, are frustrated about the uncontrollable. Others highlighting different hurdles — like an unexpected loss in the family — and how leaning into movement during a difficult time has been the greatest gift. Okay
I feel grateful to be on the receiving end of your messages each and every day (and I really do try to respond to all of them). It’s my goal to connect more of you together in community to share (and persevere) through life’s hurdles together. So, allow me one more time to highlight the Hurdle membership, with exclusive members-only message boards and community events, as well as the ~Secret~ Hurdlers Facebook Group.
GEAR REVIEW OF THE WEEK
Saucony Endorphin Pro+ ($250)
It’s been a long time since I felt this way about on a sneaker. As someone who adores the Saucony Endorphin Pro 2, I knew that I was going to geek out over the Endorphin Pro+. A limited release sneaker coming out this week, the Pro+ is essentially a next-level version of the 2. I literally squealed the second I put it on.
EMILY’S FAVORITE THINGS: SHORTS
Fall is finally here, but that doesn’t mean it’s time to put away your favorite workout shorts just yet. Typically you want to dress like it’s about 10 to 15 degrees warmer outside than it actually is when you head out for a sweat. This accommodates for the heat that your body generates when you start to get your heart rate up. In other words, now is as good of a time as any to spruce up your shorts game. In fact, you may be able to snag some of my favorite styles on sale if you shop smart.
Thank you to Revtown for sponsoring this week’s newsletter!

HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
I’m Listening To: If Orange Was a Place by Tems
This album is a vibe. It came on shuffle during my work day on Tuesday, and I haven’t stopped listening to it since.
I’m Reading: Afternoon Delight from Whalebone
Whalebone, one of my favorite coffee table-friendly magazines, just started sending out their “pop-up” newsletter again. It’s always a little dose of sunshine in my inbox come 3 p.m. or so, with quirky facts and tidbits of good news. I also recently picked up their wine issue at their pop-up in the West Village.
I’m Watching: Ted Lasso
The last three Fridays in a row, I’ve received the notification that there’s a new episode of Ted Lasso at 5 p.m. or so. Come 7 p.m., I’m on the couch watching it with pizza. I can’t believe it took me this long to get into this show, but I’d definitely recommend it for a feel-good, great watch. Don’t just take my word for it: Ted Lasso won seven Emmys this year, including four major awards during the live broadcast last Sunday.
A Quote That Resonated With Me: “Sometimes our expectations actually limit our possibilities because we focus on the one potential outcome and we forget all that is possible for us.” — Yasmine Cheyenne, guest on the show last week.
🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE: #HURDLEMOMENT: Everything a Beginner Cyclist Needs to Know With Pro Alison Tetrick
This episode is jam-packed with every ounce of information I wish someone told me right off the bat when I was ready to get in the saddle. From the importance of a bike fit and what gear you need to get started to the importance of fuel and how much you should be drinking on the ride, pro cyclist Alison Tetrick is buzzing with helpful information. Plus: We talk about a major #hurdlemoment in her life that left her with a traumatic brain injury, and the good that she's doing with her platform to give back to the cycling community.
🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE: 176. Gretchen Rubin, Best-Selling Author
This was an honor. Welcome Gretchen Rubin to the Hurdle family. Gretchen's known to many as the author of The Happiness Project, one of her many best-selling titles. She's also a member of Oprah’s Super Soul 100, was named one of the Most Creative People in Business by Fast Company. For episode 176, we talk about how she walked away from clerking for Sandra Day O'Connor in Washington D.C. to pursue her dream of becoming an author, and how she became the authority on all things happiness (and habits!). She answers some of your questions about how to best make a career pivot, as well as touches on other hot topics like how people can take steps to be happier in this new "normal," the power of asking tough questions, and how to give up sugar (she would know, she's done it!).
