Are You Letting People Take Advantage of Your Boundaries?
It's like a toll bridge. Follow me on this.

Presented by Priority Bicycles:
I’ve been thinking a lot about boundaries lately. Boundaries are something we GET to have. An example of a boundary: I like to work out in the mornings. I don’t typically talk to anyone — unless they’re a part of that — before the fitness is done. My sweat-drenched “me” time happens somewhere between 6 and 8 a.m., and then after a shower and coffee I’m almost always sitting down at my desk with a bottle of AG1 in tow by 9.
If someone chooses not to respect my boundaries or feels some kind of way about me taking that time for myself — after I’ve communicated to them that this is important to me — well, then they’re not my person. I need to take care of me so I can better show up in my work and for others. Friends, lovers, work relationships, whatever. Think of it like a toll bridge. In order to drive over the George Washington, for example, you have to pay a toll. It’s not negotiable. And if you don’t pay the toll (which now happens by mail) — then there’s a consequence.
… what are the consequences that happen when someone pushes your boundaries? Do they lose access to you? (Even though making that decision is hard?) Or do you keep allowing it? And if you keep allowing it — why?
You and your boundaries — they’re important. Something to think about. Keep hurdling,
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
What I’m Reading: The Joy of Movement by Kelly McGonigal
From Chelsey: “I've been meaning to read this book since listening to Kelly's interview on a podcast and am finally diving in as I was gifted the book by a dear friend (and Hurdler!). The book goes beyond familiar arguments in favor of exercise, to illustrate why movement is integral to both our happiness and our humanity.”
What I’m Watching: Candace Parker on How to Break Down Barriers And Not Accept Limits
What can't Candace Parker do? A two-time NCAA champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist and two-time WNBA champion, Parker knows what it takes to fight for your dreams. In this TED Talk, she’s sharing what she's learned during a career spent not accepting limits — and how her daughter taught her the best lesson of all.
What I’m Listening To: Chasing Excellence with Ben Bergeron
I interviewed CrossFit athlete Chandler Smith the other day for GQ, who started working with coach Ben Bergeron not all that long ago. Ben coached Katrin Davidsdottir to the podium multiple years in a row, a past Hurdle guest, and I recently stumbled onto his podcast. The episode “Benchmark, Mental Toughness Isn’t What You Think,” really resonated with me. In it, he says that athletes that put in the energy to getting stronger mentally will always see benefits to follow in their performance.
Gear I’m Loving: Energy Longline Ribbed Bra
With all of my indoor workouts as of late (hello, winter) — I’ve been doing a lot of fitness wearing only a sports bra. I love longline bras, which provide a little more coverage. Decided to recently mix things up with a few colors (shocking, not black for once), and I snagged this bra in dark red and highlight orange. Fun little pop of brightness to my early morning sweat.
Quote I’m Loving: “You be you, because at the end of the day you will only always have you.” — Gabi Butler, from Monday’s episode of Hurdle
Shoutout to Hurdle’s newest sponsor, Priority Bicycles!
As we look to health in ‘22, a big part of that can be cycling. Not necessarily hardcore road or mountain bike riding, but incorporating cycling into our lives — like running errands, riding with the fam, or even commuting. The question is: Where to start? It can be intimidating shopping for bicycles, knowing what to get, being pressured into more than you need — and then there’s the stress of upkeep.
That’s where Priority Bicycles comes in. I’ve had my L-Train bike for two years now, and I love it! Priority was founded by cycling industry veterans who weren’t just thinking of how to make bikes faster and more techy but wanted to make bicycles that were easier to ride and maintain. All of their bicycles feature a “low maintenance” design. Their models are light and intuitive, have things like puncture resistant tires, and a carbon fiber belt drive instead of chain.
Get moving in style today. They are hooking up Hurdlers with $50 off their bike purchase using “HURDLE” at checkout. Click on over to PriorityBicycles.com/Hurdle and learn more!
🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE: 191. Gabi Butler, Cheerleader & 'Cheer' Star
If you recognize her name, it may be because you, too, have already watched Cheer season two. In this week’s conversation with Gabi, we talk about it all: Her early days of cheer and at Navarro, her work ethic and how much she appreciates coach Monica and the Navarro family, as well as her newfound relationship with God and how it helped her through the darkest months of the pandemic. Gabi brings such a positive and grateful attitude toward all of her experiences — good or bad. Her sentiments are a great reminder of how to look at your passion as a stepping stone in life to better let go of roadblocks and appreciate successes.
🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE: On The Importance of Making Time for Self-Care With Natasha Hastings
Self-care isn't something that you automatically excel at. For many, it can be super challenging, despite its importance. Thats what I'm talking about with Natasha Hastings, Gold medalist athlete-turned entrepreneur (and, past Hurdle guest!). We're talking about how the single mom makes time for herself, plus how she's learned to give herself grace when life gets hectic and things don't go as planned. Plus, she offers up some of her best-practice strategies to maintaining her peace, and some of the most helpful takeaways that she's learned from her therapist.
