Presented by LMNT:
In my almost-10 years of living in New York, I’ve never been here for Christmas. As I sit here tapping words to laptop on Christmas Eve afternoon, I feel pretty grateful that I’m here at home — even if it wasn’t my first-choice plan. I’ve managed to squeeze in some of my most favorite, festive activities (including a first-ever trip to Dyker Heights, above, and some shopping on Arthur Avenue), and it’s a special kind of peaceful when I walk out my front door. I know the running joke of this year has been “the city is a ghost town,” but now is likely the emptiest I’ve ever seen her.
I love here still.
I’m not going to ramble on this week. I did want to pop in, however, to wish you and your loved ones a happy holiday. As I mentioned in last week’s newsletter, I’m about to embark on an evening of cooking, Christmas movies, one-too-many Sfogliatella (actually, I don’t think that’s possible), and family FaceTimes. Hopefully I’ve remembered all of the ingredients. Should I have overlooked something important, I’ve got two bottles of wine (the good stuff) and some eggnog on deck.
Whether you’re spending today celebrating Christmas or not, I hope that you find a few moments to reflect on the good that this helluva year has brought (trust me, there’s been some good). There have certainly been times over the past 365 where I’ve struggled to make that a priority, but never a moment where I questioned the beauty that is the Hurdle community.
Merry merry, all. Thank you for motivating me to show up to the good, the bad, and everything in between. Let’s finish this year out strong.
Talk soon,
Em
