Presented by Future:
I was talking to my yoga teacher, Bethany, about the whole owning your no thing I wrote about last week after class on Wednesday morning. This year, she became a mom and told me that she could really relate to the importance boundary-setting to better her mental health while taking care of her baby. Her therapist taught her a concept that’s been super helpful to this, and that concept is called “infrastructure time.”
Infrastructure time, she told me, is time that’s spent reinforcing your foundation that you shouldn’t have any guilt over. It could involve anything that helps you feel whole: A manicure appointment. Heading out for a run, taking a yoga class, setting up a call with your close friend, sitting down to journal. The only rule is that you schedule it like you would an important meeting. Because, well, this is foundational to you feeling like your best self.
It’s interesting. While she was explaining infrastructure time, I thought to myself: This sounds like a no-brainer. But I’ve been on the other side, asking myself: Is there something else I should be doing today instead of X or Y?
Fact is: We each have the opportunity to remove the guilt. And when you do that? Life feels a little breezier and more manageable. And more manageable, well, that’s something we all deserve. Infrastructure time — something I believe could be essential for us all.
Tell me: What’s one thing you could accomplish with infrastructure time?
Keep hurdling,
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
I’m Listening To: “How to Disagree Better” from The Happiness Lab
Fun fact: Our minds often fool us into thinking we disagree with people more than is actually true. Found this episode, that touches on how we can tame that misconception and get on with people who think a little differently to us, super timely considering where we’re at in the election cycle (insert big, toothy, grinning emoji here).
Gear I’m Loving: Athleta’s Garnet Collection
I’m a sucker for anything maroon-ish (hence the maroon accents in the original Hurdle logo. I recently got this Jetset Bomber, transcend legging, and top set in their new garnet color — and I’m obsessed with it. These leggings are my travel and lounging go-to, uber comfortable for hanging out in but also a staple for lifting at the gym.
What I’m Reading: Funny Story by Emily Henry
Y’all. This is the first fiction book I’ve purchased in a while, and damn I forgot how good it is to escape for a bit and read something that isn’t geared toward making me a better person. (Self-help books, don’t worry, I’ll be back.) Absolutely breezing through this Emily Henry read, and I’m now accepting recommendations for more fiction picks in the comments below.
Prompt I’m Loving: Who inspires you to be better regularly?
