I like to keep busy. To put in a more positive note, I’m always looking for ways to maximize my time (also a big fan of positive affirmations). I often find myself looking at tasks like the daily commute or cooking dinner and think “what else can I do during this time?” Whether that be catching up on a podcast, checking emails while the water starts boiling, or calling family/friends on the drive home, I rarely find myself feeling “bored.”
Admittedly, this constant go-go-go mindset can also feel overwhelming at times. It’s as if there isn’t enough time in the day to get everything checked off the list of never ending tasks and responsibilities.
Last weekend, I went up north (in Minnesota) to my family cabin, where there is very little cell service, no Wi-Fi, and three channels that come through the TV via the old-fashioned antenna. During the nearly 4-hour drive, I thought “what am I going to do all weekend?” It was a realization of the disconnect I was approaching.
Each time I take a weekend like this to really hit pause on the constant “busy” I’ve become accustomed to, the anxious feelings are soon met with an utter sense of contentment and calm. There’s a deep appreciation for the time to just spend with — you. Immersing yourself into a setting that forces you to slow down, you start to come back to yourself.
Your thoughts.
Your feelings.
Your Intentions.
Although only for a few days — this short, abrupt shift in pace was exactly what I needed. An opportunity to remove myself from distraction and take some time for a little self-inventory. In retrospect, I didn’t necessarily need a cabin to escape to. Maybe you don’t, either. Perhaps it’s a long, Sunday morning walk with your phone on do not disturb. Maybe it’s a yoga class at your favorite studio. A solo date or weekend trip.
Wherever and whenever works for you, I challenge you to take some time to pause. Really spend some time, as uncomfortable as it might first seem, to just be. Let your mind wander, check in with your body, and take inventory of your thoughts. Give yourself the space and time to just be with yourself. You might just get the clarity and calm you’ve been searching for. I know I did.
Keep hurdling,
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
What I’m Reading: Bomb Shelter by Mary Laura Phillpott
From Chels: “I had the opportunity to meet Mary Laura at an event a few years ago, and her most recent book release is the perfect blend of storytelling meets memoir meets self-help. If you’re looking for a read that will make you feel all the emotions and challenges you take a look at your own experiences, this is the one.”
What I’m Listening To: Fast & Loose from Bandit Running
There’s a relatively new running brand in New York, built by some friends of mine, called Bandit. This week, Bandit released their first podcast called Fast & Loose, hosted by Sashah Handal and Tim Rossi. A huge kudos to the team for jumping in on this, excited to follow along with where it goes from here!
Gear I’m Loving: Nike Sportswear Essential Jacket
I can’t stop wearing this oversized utility cropped bomber, which I’ve paired with everything from leggings to skirts.
Who I Love Following: Rebeckah Price
I meditated with Rebeckah Price recently, and found her entire being and presence so calming. You can check her out in the new prenatal and postnatal program on the NTC app, or listen to her on the Fitness in Color podcast.
Quote I’m Loving: “Do not ignore the pain. Give it purpose. Use it.” — Amanda Gorman
