Presented by LMNT:
There’s something about international travel that makes me go with the flow a bit more. Say yes without overthinking. Be more spontaneous. I’m typing this newsletter from a small cafe down the street from a hotel in Chamonix, France, and thinking about how “Travel Emily” should be more the status quo.
… I have a hunch that this version of me has to do with being slightly disconnected. I don’t typically take my phone off of Airplane Mode when traveling, which means I only have access to Internet-based apps and email when I’m on Wi-Fi. Pair that with a genuine curiosity about people and place, plus the freedom that comes with going through more than half of a day before friends and family (plus: Inbox) are stirring back home, and I simply feel lighter.
It’s a lightness I’m in tune with. One that makes me feel at peace. One that I want to maintain. Considering traveling constantly (not for work reasons) isn’t really in the cards right now, that means I have to ask myself: How can I integrate some of that freedom and contentment into my day-to-day back home?
It starts with awareness, for sure. Because awareness and recognition are the first steps toward a shift and implementation.
So: What are you aware of — maybe a routine or habit — that makes you feel lighter? Is it one you could implement more of regularly?
Something to think about.
Keep hurdling,
HIGHLIGHTS OF THE WEEK
I’m Listening To: Vox Conversations “The Quest for Authenticity”
A pull quote I loved from this podcast: “Our identity isn’t fixed, we’re always in this state of becoming.” I really appreciated this talk between Sean Illing and Skye Cleary, a philosopher and author of the new book How to Be Authentic. They cover: What authenticity really means — and how it's often a misused term. Plus: why we should resist performing roles predetermined for us by society, and how to have a truly intimate relationship without surrendering yourself — or your freedom.
I’m Watching: “How a ‘Hi Level’ Mindset Helps You Realize Your Potential”
A friend sent me this Ted Talk from hip-hop artist Cordae who talks about achieving his dreams, going from a mixtape-dropping high school kid to Grammy-nominated music star. Only a 13-minute watch here. The gist: Don’t let a small “failure” deter you from your goals.
Gear I’m Loving: Camelbak Circuit Vest
I have tried a few different hydration vests in my day, and I haven’t found one I loved — until now. This pack from Camelbak is 100 percent no-bounce, which is a must for me. Plus, it can carry two bottles plus a reservoir — making it the ideal companion for either a long run or trail hike with multiple types of liquids (i.e. electrolytes and regular H20).
Quote I’m Loving: "Just because it's taking time doesn't mean it's not happening.” — unknown
Thanks to LMNT — an electrolyte drink mix with everything you need and nothing you don't — for supporting Hurdle.
Meet LMNT, zero-sugar hydration to support your active lifestyle. I’m the saltiest sweater (cute, I know). These electrolytes have been my go-to recently to perform better. 🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE: 218. Brooke Wells, CrossFit Athlete
Brooke Wells knows a thing or two about overcoming major hurdles. During the 2021 CrossFit Games, the track-athlete-turned-CrossFit-fanatic dislocated her elbow (among other things). She was devastated when she had to withdraw from competition. For episode 218, she's telling us about her road to recovery — paved with grit and determination — which enabled her to come in FIFTH at this year's Games. We also talk the importance of self-belief, her feeling's on NoBull taking over the token sponsorship of the Games, and how she managed to train solo for so many years and succeed without an ever-present support squad. Plus: Her new Nashville chapter, and how she stays positive when times get tough.
🎧 NEW PODCAST EPISODE: #HURDLEMOMENT: A Nutritionist on Inflammation: What Causes IT, Symptoms & Treatments
Inflammation: We've been taught, for the most part, that it's "bad." But Andrea Nakayama, functional nutritionist, educator, and founder of the Functional Nutrition Alliance, is here to dispel that this week. We chat on how to identify inflammation, the causes of it, what can be done to treat it, and address what some foods could be the culprit.
